JAMES - On the 16th Feb., at Edgeworth Manor, Cirencester, in his 36th year, Edward Tite James (Major 1st South Lancashire Regt.), youngest son of the late Francis James, of Edgeworth Manor."
"Obituary
Captain and Brevet Major Edward Tite James, of the Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment), died on Monday at his brother's residence, Edgeworth-manor, Cirencester, from tuberculosis meningitis, the outcome of lung disease contracted from exposure while on active service in South Africa. The youngest son of the late Mr. Francis James, of Edgeworth-manor, Major James was born on June 22, 1867, and joined the South Lancashire Regiment from the Militia battalion in November, 1888, obtaining his step in December, 1889, and his commny in March 1897. He served in South Africa with the first battalion of his regiment in 1899-1900, and took part in the relief of Ladysmith; the operations of January 17 to 24, 1900, including the action at Spion Kop; those of February 5 to 7, and the action of Vaal Kraus; and those on Tugela Heights from February 14 to 27. For his services in the field he was twice mentioned in dispatches and received the brevet of major; and, later, was one of the officers specially selected for admission as students to the Staff College. Major James married the daughter of Colonel R. W. Edis, C.R., lately commanding the 20th Middlesex (Artist's) Rifle Volunteers."
